Born in 1943, Ion I. Cotaescu is graduate and Ph.D. in theoretical physics of the University of Bucharest. He is retiring now as professor and Ph.D advisor at the Physics Faculty of the West University of Timisoara, where he was dean (1990-1996) and chairman (1998-2011). He was one of the editors in gravitation and cosmology of the Central European Journal of Physics (2006-2011). In over 60 of published papers in international journals he focused on the quantum theory on flat or curved backgrounds, obtaining results in: 331 gauge theories, symmetries and supersymmetries in general relativity, generalized Dirac monopoles and the theory of quantum fields on the de Sitter, anti-de Sitter and Taub-NUT backgrounds.

The quantum theory is the first theoretical approach that helps one to successfully understand the atomic and sub-atomic worlds which are too far from the cognition based on the common intuition or the experience of the daily-life. This is a very coherent theory in which a good system of hypotheses and appropriate mathematical methods allow one to describe exactly the dynamics of the quantum systems whose measurements are systematically affected by objective uncertainties. Thanks to the quantum theory we are able now to use and control new quantum devices and technologies in quantum optics and lasers, quantum electronics and quantum computing or in the modern field of nano-technologies.
