The Female Pelvis - Anatomy, Function and Disorders

The female pelvis plays important functions as it encompasses the reproductive, urologic, and gastrointestinal systems. On one hand, the female pelvis needs to be wide enough for childbirth. On the other hand, the pelvic muscles and connective tissues crossing the floor of the pelvis form an anatomical hammock supporting the pelvic organs. In this book, we plan to set up two sections. Section one will cover basic ideas about the female pelvis. We plan to introduce the anatomy of the female pelvis first. Only with a full understanding of female pelvis anatomy, can one comprehend its function. Then we would like to use one or two chapters to discuss the physiology and pathophysiology of the female pelvis. In section two, we plan to present the diagnosis and treatment for female pelvic disorders, including urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, overactive bladder, nocturnal enuresis, pelvic organ prolapses, and interstitial cystitis, bladder pain syndrome, and female bladder outlet obstruction. Not only will the currently available evidence be presented, but also the valuable experience of authors from different countries will also be demonstrated. We believe this book can benefit both clinicians and patients.

FAQs

What is an Open Access publishing process?
The Open Access publishing movement started in early 2000s, when academic leaders from around the world participated in the formation of the Budapest Initiative. They developed recommendations for publishing in Open “which has worked for the past decade to provide the public with unrestricted, free access to scholarly research—much of which is publicly funded. Making the research publicly available to everyone—free of charge and without most copyright and licensing restrictions” with the goal to “accelerate scientific research efforts and allow authors to reach a larger number of readers.”(reference: http://www.budapestopenaccessinitiative.org/)

IntechOpen’s founders, both scientists, created the company while doing research in robotics at the University of Vienna, Austria. Their goals to spread the research freely “for the scientists, by the scientist’ to the rest of the world, aligned with the Open Access movement, and the company soon became the signatory of the Budapest Initiative, which currently has more than 1000 supporting organizations worldwide, ranging from universities to funders.

At IntechOpen, we are excited to be working with organizations and people who care about scientific discovery, put the academic needs of the scientific community first, and provide an Open Access environment where scientists can maximize their contribution to humanity. By opening access to the world’s scientific research articles and book chapters, we hope to inspire greater opportunities for collaboration, scientific discovery and progress. We gladly follow the definition of Open Access:

“By “open access” to [peer-reviewed research literature], we mean its free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. The only constraint on reproduction and distribution, and the only role for copyright in this domain, should be to give authors control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited.” (reference: http://www.budapestopenaccessinitiative.org/)

How does Open Access publishing process work? What does free-of-charge mean?
Almost 15 years after the start of this movement, many universities and leading foundations have developed policies to provide scientists with funding -- for both research as well as publishing fees. This is a disruptive business model where university libraries are shifting a portion of their funds from paying subscriptions to traditional publisher toward creating, what many call Open Access Funding, which is dedicated towards scientists’/researchers’ publishing fees. The funders are transparent about reimbursements or direct payment on behalf of the researcher and most list their policies and protocols for obtaining funding for publishing research on their websites. In this sense, free-of-charge in Open Access is defined as research published in Open Access is always free to download, read and share.
Where are IntechOpen’s books indexed?
IntechOpen's publications are available in the most relevant scientific databases, including:
  • WEB OF SCIENCE
  • BKCI
  • BASE
  • AZ
  • OPEN AIRE
  • WORLDCAT
  • Google Scholar
Our books are submitted for indexing in the Book Citation Index in the Web of Science™ Core Collection (BKCI). The books currently indexed in BKCI can be browsed on our website.

In addition to BKCI, IntechOpen covers a number of important discipline specific databases as well, such as Clarivate Analytics’ BIOSIS Previews and all our Open Access books are indexed in CNKI Scholar, the largest and most comprehensive aggregator of academic digital resources in China.
What do you mean by fast book publishing?
Publishing a book in a conventional publishing business usually takes more than two years. Given the speed at which science is advancing, it is frequent that some of the research findings at the time of publishing will no longer be current. At IntechOpen, we pride ourselves in equipping you with the best combination of technology and service that allows for a fast publishing process. We have developed Online First, which enables individual chapters to be published after review, even before the entire book is ready for publication. Online First ensures research is made available to the scientific community without delay. With Online First, chapters are released and made searchable and citable by DOI, so you can start receiving citations and downloads immediately without being dependent on the last authors to submit to the book. Once the rest of the book is ready, which we can typically do in eight to ten months, depending on the number of chapters in a book and the responsiveness of authors, the chapter then becomes part of the broader publication.
Who are IntechOpen’s contributing editors and authors?
We are proud to say that our Editors and Fellows come from universities and institutes from around the world. They are Nobel Laureates, recipients of many awards, and most importantly their work is being read, cited and referenced by the scientific community. For a look at IntechOpen’s contributors, please visit: here.
What are the scope and topics of IntechOpen’s books and chapters?
IntechOpen books are self-contained collections of scholarly research papers targeting an audience of practicing researchers, academics, Ph.D. students and other scientists. The topics are from a variety of scientific fields. We accept theoretical and applied scientific papers which can be presented as original research papers and review papers. The required length of the full chapters is 10-20 pages.

Authors can check the Scope and Topics of a book project, choose a topic which best suits their current research efforts and present their work as it relates to the topic for which they have chosen.
What is a difference between publishing an article in a journal and publishing a book chapter?
The chapter format allows for an introduction to research concepts and ideas with a more comprehensive analysis compared to traditional journal articles. Publishing your research, which may have already been published in a much shorter journal format, can be expanded to 10-20 pages, as a chapter in an IntechOpen book. In addition, your findings are published alongside what other researchers from around the globe are publishing and studying on the very same topics.
What are publishing fees and how do they compare to traditional publishers or other Open Access publishers?
At IntechOpen we provide complimentary publishing of introductory chapters for editors, and we charge publishing fees for book chapters. The fees are 1400 GBP per chapter.
What are the benefits of publishing book chapters with IntechOpen?
We have worked exceptionally hard to fine tune the Open Access book publishing process and we continue to deliver a quality, supportive environment for all of our contributors. I have no publishing funds, how can I cover the publishing fee?
At IntechOpen, most fees are paid by an author’s institution or a funding agency. The first step in obtaining funds for your Open Access publication begins with your institution or library – we suggest you research, “open access” or “scholarly publications” within your affiliated organization. Most universities have specific Open Access policies as well as dedicated funds for publishing research in Open Access. IntechOpen complies with all libraries’ needs for third-party, objective publishers.
What if I still cannot get the funding?
To further explore funding opportunities and learn more about how you can finance your Open Access publication, check out our Open Access Funding page.

Additionally, IntechOpen offers assistance to all of its authors. We can support you in approaching the funding bodies and institutions in relation to publishing fees by providing information about compliance with Open Access policies of your funder/institution. As well as help with communicating the benefits of Open Access in order to support your funding request and personal guidance through the application process. You can contact us at oapf@intechopen.com for further details or assistance.

For authors who cannot obtain funding from their institutions or research funding bodies, IntechOpen offers the possibility of applying for a waiver. Details regarding our Waiver Policy can be found here.
I have no time now to write a book chapter, how can I contribute in the future?
Depending on the deadlines for a particular book, it is always best to communicate your needs with IntechOpen’s Publishing Process Manager who leads that particular book. We try to accommodate extensions to certain deadlines, if possible. As an alternative, IntechOpen regularly updates the Open for Submissions page where you are welcome to browse a list of current Open Access books accepting submissions that might better align with your availability.
